Rac2, along with Rac1 and Rac3, belongs to a family of Rho guanosine triphosphatases (GTPases). Almost all Rho family GTPases, including the Rac family, stimulate actin polymerization within the cell – regulating changes in cytoskeletal structure affecting cell shape, migration and adhesion.
Rac2 is found exclusively in cells of hematopoietic origin and is important in their development; it controls hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell retention in bone marrow which is critical to the homeostasis of blood cell production. Mice homozygous for Rac2 deletions develop microcytic anemia with a haemoglobin drop of about 20% and enhanced haemolytic processes [1]. Read more »»
