Figure 1. During early apoptosis, the plasma membrane loses asymmetry causing PS to be translocated from the cytoplasmic face of the plasma membrane to the external face which can be detected using Annexin V. As apoptosis progresses and the plasma membrane becomes compromised, PI is used as an additional marker of apoptosis.
