Neuroscience research

There is one system that controls all the others: The nervous system. This complex system is made up of highly specialized cells, called neurons, that sends signals at high velocity. Neurons can be considered as the ‘building blocks’ of the brain. Over 100 billion neurons are present in the brain, with millions more throughout the whole body. This giant network of nerves and fibers is connected to the brain. They are very well attuned to each other and have a perfect synergy to turn data into action. Did you know that the amount of data compression that happens between the retina and the optic nerve, is the biggest amount of data compression that we’ve ever witnessed in biology?

The communication between neurons is established through electricity and releasing chemicals: A mixture between a lightning storm and a chemical storm. The first neuron releases a chemical substance, that is detected by the second neuron which then continues that electrical activity. The nervous system is a very flexible system. It’s highly capable of adapting, a process which is called ‘neuroplasticity’. Every single neuron in the brain can form up to 10.000 connections with other neurons. Those links change based on the things we do most. For example: When you learn to ride a unicycle, you need to keep your balance and also try to move forward. In the beginning, the pathway is temporary and forged by chemicals surrounding the neurons. But as you practice riding the unicycle more, those chemical changes become structural. Neurons will change their shape and shift position. A fixed pathway is established and connections between different brain regions are strengthened [ref. 1].

The brain: Highly adaptable but also delicate

The vulnerability of the human brain is clear from the great variety of neurological diseases known worldwide. For example, Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks [ref. 2]. Thanks to evolving biomarker research and substantial discoveries, it is now possible to identify the disease even at the preclinical stage before the occurrence of the first clinical symptoms [ref. 3].
