Unique ELISA for evaluating oxidative stress

Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxidized LDL) is an established biomarker for oxidative stress and a specific causal biomarker for the atherosclerotic disease process.

Elevated plasma levels of oxidized LDL are associated with higher cardiovascular risk and higher incidence of metabolic diseases, i.e., metabolic syndrome, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. Also, sub-clinical atherosclerosis, kidney, and liver diseases are associated with increased levels of oxidized LDL.

First-to-market test for evaluating oxidative stress

Mercodia’s Oxidized LDL ELISA was launched 20 years ago as the first-to-market test for evaluating oxidative stress. The assay is intended to be used for the in vitro quantitative measurement of oxidized LDL in human serum or plasma and is the most widely used ELISA in oxidized LDL research.

Unique specificity

The term oxidized LDL is often used to describe a variety of LDL molecules because the composition of this molecule is very heterogeneous depending on the grade of oxidation.

The specificity of the 4E6 mouse monoclonal antibody used in the Mercodia Oxidized LDL ELISA ensures that the assay measures the highly oxidized forms of lipid and aldehyde modified oxidized LDL which are the cause of foam cell formation. This contrasts with other ELISA assays with specificity towards malondialdehyde (MDA) modified LDL, which not only recognizes oxidized LDL with an affinity for scavenger-receptors but also LDL with a lower grade of oxidation.

The unique affinity of the proprietary mouse monoclonal antibody 4E6 used in the Mercodia Oxidized LDL ELISA makes it possible to measure both lipid and aldehyde modified oxidized LDL, which sets this assay apart from assays based on other antibodies.
